CFSI and the Canadian Organic Standards and Regulations
On May 26, 2008 the Canadian Food Safety Institute(CFSI) organized and delivered a National Organic Safety Forum at the Best Western Hotel in Mississauga, Ontario. More than 100 attendees across Canada and the USA participated on-site and by Webinar.
After this event, the Organic Regime Office announced the original enforcement date was moved from December 2008 to June 30, 2009 to allow industry players to prepare for appropriate compliance and other necessary activities.
On June 30, 2009 the Organic Products Regulations came into effect, making the new Canadian Organic Standards mandatory. The Organic Products Regulations (OPR) (SOR/2006-338) were published December 14, 2006 in the Canada Gazette (Extra Vol. 140, No. 6). The Canadian organic sector was granted a transition period before the regulations come into full force by June 30, 2009.
They will legally require organic products to be certified according to the Canadian Organic Standards (COS) if they are traded across provincial or international borders or use the Canada Organic Logo. (above)
***Canadian Consumers are advised to look for the Canadian Organic Logo on Organic Food Products when shopping at food stores.
